The NYSCC’s Fish Committee, expresses strong support for the proposed Adirondack Brook Trout Pond Management Plan. The Council agrees with the plan’s rationale, especially in light of climate change and invasive species, and appreciates the inclusion of citizen anglers and stakeholders in its development. Key strengths of the plan include protection of native “heritage strain” brook trout, restrictions on baitfish use, stocking strategies that preserve genetic diversity, and practical implementation timelines. However, the Council recommends increased citizen involvement in maintaining fish barriers, stricter stocking policies that avoid non-native species in sensitive areas, and better alignment with the state’s Trout Stream Management Plan. Specifically, it advocates for a unified harvest limit of five trout per day, with only two over 12 inches, in all wild brook trout ponds. Overall, the Council is hopeful that its recommendations will be integrated and expresses deep appreciation for ongoing and historical efforts to conserve New York’s native brook trout and their habitats.
